Patriot Groups throughout the Maricopa and North Pinal County area.
They've trained long and hard. They're smart. They're an advance guard, watching out for us, our children, and our country. And for America, they willingly face huge odds and risk their personal freedoms to protect ours. We seldom know their names or hear of their work.
Whom am I talking about? US Marines? Navy Seals? Army Delta Force, Rangers, or Green Berets?
Well, those plaudits surely apply to all of them, but I'm writing about a new breed of American heroes. These are the CIA officers like those who interrogated Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Abu Faraj al-Libi in Polish and Romanian prisons. And who are the enemies that threaten these new heroes? Al Qaeda? Terrorists?
No. It's our very own Attorney General Eric Holder and the Great American Left!
As Dan Henninger wrote in today's Wall Street Journal:
In August 2009, Attorney General Holder announced that he was extending the mandate of Assistant U.S. Attorney John Durham into the CIA's so-called "enhanced interrogation techniques" of terrorist detainees. Former Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey had appointed Mr. Durham in 2008 as a special prosecutor to look into the CIA's destruction of videotapes made during interrogations of two al Qaeda
operatives. That investigation ended without charges last November.
Nonetheless, writes Henninger:
Mr. Holder decided to push the Durham investigation into a second phase. "I have concluded," he said "that the information known to me warrants opening a preliminary review into whether federal laws were violated in connection with the interrogation of specific detainees at overseas locations." Mr. Holder wasn't free-lancing; both he and Barack Obama had called waterboarding "torture."
If you're old enough, you can still remember those self-righteous Leftist college kids who spat on returning Viet Nam veterans* and delighted in calling law enforcement officers "pigs" . They're all grown up now, they've infested our Department of Justice, and they've carried their 1960's and 70's prejudices right along with them. They just know for sure that the CIA is evil, and they've pursued a place in government to prove it.
So where's that proof? Henninger continues with:
If Mr. Holder has evidence of an egregious crime, he should step forward and announce it. If not, he should use this moment to put an end to the Durham investigation. Mr. Durham is not an independent counsel, whose hallowed status makes attorneys general loath to interfere. He is a special prosecutor, appointed by the attorney general and under his authority.
On June 18 last year, Mr. Holder said in a Washington speech that Mr. Durham was "close to the end of the time that he needs and will be making recommendations to me." But nothing has happened. Asked this week about the status of this investigation, a Justice Department spokesman for Mr. Durham, whose office is in Connecticut, said the project is "still ongoing."
"Ongoing" and "very close" have become the code words Holder uses in his lame attempts to cover his procrastination, dissembling, and visible bewilderment when questioned. Remember the endless machinations over where to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed? Same phrases ... same process. First Holder backs himself into a corner with a bone-headed, ideologically driven decision, and then he dissembles for months when he realizes how stupid he's made himself look, not to mention his boss, Barack Obama.
With the killing of Bin Laden and reports that critical intelligence information may indeed have come from those CIA interrogations, Holder has the chance to rescue himself and his President from yet another unforced error. Will he take it, or will he make yet another ideological decision by pursuing prosecution of the CIA officers?
If Holder chooses the latter, he will rightly create a new breed of Jack-Bauer-like American heroes who risk prosecution and ruination by their own government when they attempt to get the information needed to pursue and destroy those who would destroy us.
The 1960's are over, Mr. Holder. It's time to move on. Much as we could use more heroes, it's time for you to recognize who America's real enemies are. Hint: it's not the CIA.
*Caveat: Since the original posting, one astute reader has pointed out that this may be the stuff of "urban legend". Agreed. The venerable snopes.com is inconclusive on this issue, and the many anecdotal web postings on both sides of the subject appear to be unconfirmable. When it all "went down", cell phone cameras were still two decades away.
